Regimental Surgeon - 1st New Jersey Regiment

In the 18th century, a regimental surgeon would have to know general medicine, dentistry, opthamology and pharmacology in addition to surgical procedures.

Our regimental surgeon has hand-crafted most of the medical instruments on display, copied from museum pieces or from original bookplates in period texts. The medicines are also the real thing, not colored water or inert powders (except those representing substances now controlled by state or federal law).

You will find this a fascinating exhibit, with books and reproduced medical papers, as well as charts and illustrations. "Dr George McClelland" will be happy to demonstrate instruments and procedures on volunteers brave enough to experience 18th century medicine.
